The actual roots can safely be in the gravel but the rhizome which is the green stem the leaves are attached to must be well above the substrate always.

You appear to have buried the rhizome which will cause it to rot and the plant to die entirely. Suddenly theyre getting holes in the leaves where the green-ness has vanished to leave lacy patches and some stems are turning yellow followed by the leaf falling off. Anubias stems snap very easily at the rhizome if bent backward.

Thats really good growth I only have a few that have that many nice white new roots very healthy. I pick the tied driftwood out I cut off the black cotton thread and I dissected the plants leftover the rhizome leaf and stem. Dont cut them you want the stems to sever cleanly.

However unlike the melting caused by emersed-grown leaves a leaf lost from anubias rot often detaches at the end of its leaf stalk where it originally connected to the rhizome. My guess is they mostly only flower out of water. This is not black hair algae this is just regular algae that. Anubias Nana roots are falling off.

The base of the leaf stalk may feel soggy or have a little bit of goo oozing out.
